Jürgen Bruns - Artistic Director
Jürgen Bruns was born in Greifswald in 1966. He studied violin at
the "Hanns Eisler" Academy of Music Berlin between 1983 and
1988 and became a member of the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester (Berlin Symphonic
Orchestra) while still a student. In addition to his conducting studies
at the "Hanns Eisler" Academy of Music Berlin with Rolf Reuter.
Jürgen Bruns took lessons from Gilbert Varga in Florence and Charles
Bruck in Paris. Further studies led him to the "Pierre Monteux School"
in Maine (USA) from 1991 - 1992.
In order to devote his time more intensely to conducting, he gave up
his position at the Berlin Sinfonie-Orchester in 1991. In the following
years, Jürgen Bruns attended international conducting courses and
competitions, where he gained several prizes. Various invitations followed.
He has meanwhile established himself as a much-valued guest conductor
at renowned orchestras and opera houses all over Europe. Since 2006 his
is chief conductor of the KOS, Ljubljana.
Jürgen Bruns regularly receives invitations from international festivals
like the Festival International de Musique Sion (International Music Festival
in Sion), the Kurt-Weill-Fest Dessau (Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau),
the Dresdner Musikfestspiele (Dresden Music Festival) and the Ravello
Festival. As music director Jürgen Bruns cooperates with renowned
theatre directors, including Peter Zadek, with whom Jürgen Bruns
has often worked together, most recently in a Zadek production of Brecht's
"Mutter Courage" at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin.
In 1991, Jürgen Bruns founded the KAMMERSYMPHONIE BERLIN and has
remained its artistic director until today. The KAMMERSYMPHONIE BERLIN
focuses on classical modern music and works by composers outlawed by Nazi
Germany - a matter of concern for Jürgen Bruns as conductor and the
main reason for founding the ensemble.
Jürgen Bruns has recorded quite a few CDs (e.g. with Capriccio,
EDA, Signum, Quadriga, Lynor, Deutsche Grammophon) as well as film and
radio recordings. Many of the works are world premier recordings. Since
206 he is the artistic director of the CD series Club 100
at Deutsche Grammophon/Universal.
Jürgen Bruns' conceptional concert programming quite often challenges
established forms in traditional state theatre and concert business. By
combining classical music with other genres of art, he succeeds in opening
up new audiences.
Jürgen Bruns received the Siemens-Förderpreis by the prestigious
Siemens Music Foundation three times and has been awarded with the "Förderpreis
Musik 2002" (Sponsorship Prize 2002) of the Musikakademie (Music
Academy) Rheinsberg and the federal state of Brandenburg.
